The book is all about the Courtney family based in South Africa, before the boa war.

First big focus on the South African veld

Starting out with a double tragedy this story really had me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. Unlike the earlier chronological books in this series there were no ships or sea voyages, and it based largely around Johannesburg just when gold was being found, and in the veld North of Pretoria. It felt like the most tragedy so far in a single book in this series. I’m really looking forward to getting on with the Boer War and WWI editions in the Cortney saga.
