The new administration has a positive attitude toward space. They've even asked me–along with many others, of course–to draft a national space policy. we space enthusiasts–and who else would buy this book?–have a lot to cheer about.
Except for one problem: there are those who say we must reduce the national budget and 'we cannot fight inflation on the backs of the poor'. The space budget is expendable, while one cannot trim welfare costs.
If you'll believe that, you'll believe anything. Society isn't a zero-sum game, and redistributing poverty solves no problems for anyone. The only real way to help the poor is to produce so many goods that everyone can be rich.
Space can do that for us.
