Another enthralling saga in the Courtney series. This one involved countless action and reversals of fortune. I liked that he wrapped up with what happened to each surviving character at the end. I did not really enjoy all the gory detail about the elephant hunt near the beginning.

Starting out with a double tragedy this story really had me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. Unlike the earlier chronological books in this series there were no ships or sea voyages, and it based largely around Johannesburg just when gold was being found, and in the veld North of Pretoria. It felt like the most tragedy so far in a single book in this series. I’m really looking forward to getting on with the Boer War and WWI editions in the Cortney saga.

Another enjoyable read in the Courtney saga that had me forgetting to put the book down a few times (always a good sign if I lose myself in a book). The only problem with reading the books in the series, one after the other, is the recipe does start to expose itself a bit. But nevertheless an enjoyable read and I especially find the setting and imagery of Africa, and South Africa, really touching a chord for me.

It was going to be difficult to top the previous book Bird of Prey, and this was not quite as exciting as that book. But nevertheless I still really enjoyed this book. The difference was probably the sheer amount of action and events packed into the first book.
