Das Radio im Titel spielt in der Geschichte keine so große Rolle. Der Titel ist wahrscheinlich auch eher metaphorisch gemeint. Damals wurde der Krieg in Westeuropa zwar wahrgenommen aber wenig empathisch reagiert. Jetzt, Jahrzehnte später, kann Tijan Sila vom Sarajevo seiner Kindheit erzählen. Von der Hilflosigkeit und Überforderung der Eltern, den Tricks, wie man an Brennstoff und Essen kommt, Freundschaft und Verrat und wie sich die Kinder im Krieg einrichten. Und obwohl das Ganze für den Ich-Erzähler ein Happy End hat, wird auch klar, dass man diese Erlebnisse niemals so richtig vergessen kann. Ein wichtiges Buch.

It's a very tough read/listen in places because unfortunately, Elliot Page had to deal with a lot of emotional abuse as a kid/teen and queerphobia later on. It was truly shocking to me to hear about the attitudes in Hollywood not that long ago. The book conveys the struggles and the difficult journey of trans persons really well, in an almost tangible way. In the end, I found myself cheering along when Elliot finally gets his top surgery. On a sidenote, I also learned a lot about Canada and Canadian history.

It's truly remarkable how much world building Djèlí Clark was able to fit into this rather short tale without it being in the way of the story. The first person narration by Creeper drew me right in abd the setting is basically everything I could demand (New Orleans, airships, a queer airship captain etc.). I recommend listening to the audiobook as it's narreted in the fitting various patois and thus adds to the atmosphere of the book. I'd love to have a follow-up or another story set in this universe.

I really recommend listening to this book. It's narrated in a rather unique way that makes 'Pet' really come to life. The story itself and especially the setting (after the revolution, in a sort of utopia) is very intriguing, too. There are perhaps some minor contradictions and the ending didn't sit quite right with me (but it's a legitimate choice by the author). But overall, I highly recommend listening to it.

Schon länger in der ARD-Audiothek. Gestern, nach dem Sieg von Trump, war ich in der Stimmung für Eskapismus der etwas anderen Art. ;) Bin aber wegen des Regierungsbruchs nicht sehr weit gekommen. Bin gespannt.

I briefly started listening to it a little while ago but couldn't get into it. Now seems to be a good time for it.

A strange book - especially in the second half I often didn't know what was really going on. It fits with Charlotte's - the main protagonist's - experience in the book. The book's prose was more complex than my usual fare and I found it sometimes a little difficult to follow. Although the author is American (she did study in Oxford) the book sounds remarkably British and she does an excellent job of conveying the emotionally surpressed world of the characters. I liked the end which felt liberating and hopeful.
