The long grass rustles at your feet as the White Rabbit hurries by. The frightened Mouse splashes his way through the neighboring pool. You can hear the rattle of the teacups as the March Hare and his friends share their never-ending meal, and the shrill voice of the Queen ordering off her unfortunate guests to execution. Once more the pig-baby is sneezing on the Duchess' knee, and the shriek of the Gryphon fills the air, mixed up with the distant sob of the miserable Mock Turtle and the sorrows of the Walrus and the Carpenter.

Alice is the perpetual friend of childhood and of those who keep the spirit of childhood. The original edition with the illustrations so earnestly discussed by the author with the artist, is still the prime favorite. Carroll often said that Tenniel was in his opinion the ideal illustrator.
