A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories 5 stars

A Manual for Cleaning Women compiles the best work of the legendary short-story writer Lucia …

Raw, real.

5 stars

For various reasons (let's count in the fact that this book is almost 400 pages long), it took me so long to read this book. I didn't know Lucia Berlin before randomly choosing this selection of her best short-stories. 90% of the books I have in my e-book reader are the result of weird lists of "books to read" I've found on the internet while I was panicking about having an empty e-book reader. So I don't know to which category this book used to belong. Was it in the "book to read written by women"? "Book to read if you want to get into contemporary short-stories"? I digress. It's difficult to me to say "I loved this book" because it sounds rather superficial and not accurate. It's complicated, as they say. I was fascinated by this book. Many narrators take the pen, but they seem to be linked together …

Wow

I love Toni Morrison. That's it. This book was a punch in the gut, a mysterious cloud of strong, hearthy smell envelopping you, the strongest and sweetest dark liquor, all given to you by the softest hands. Her style, oh her style! 🙌 You would not believe she was telling you the most heartwrenching goth story about a mother's love and slavery.

I'm a Toni Morrison stan.

I really had my hopes up for this book but, except for a nice beginning, it felt like it was all over the place. The last chapter had been taken out by the editor but it's now sold separately and... wow! If that ending is not the epitome of all over the place...!

I'm gonna give the movie a try, mainly because, from the pics I've seen, the girls dress just as I'd like to dress everyday.

TW: child sexual abuse

I wish I could give this book 5 stars, only for the luscious writing of Iris Murdoch, but I've been left perplexed by some parts of it. My main concern ist the figure of Michael, a character who clearly abuses his position of power to take advantage of young boys. I want to think about this thoroughly, because I feel like it's important for me to consider the importance of this detail in the book's context. I'll probably come out with a better review later on.
