Here we have another case of "great content, flawed execution".

First things first: this book is great. Shon Faye is right about 99.9% the things she says, and there are no two pages in this book where I didn't underline at least one sentence of the "louder for the people in the back" variety. She accurately details a huge number of problems trans people are faced with today, in general and in Britain in particular; she describes the various ways transphobia can express itself, highlights the crucial intersections between the liberations of trans, disabled, and BAME/BIPoC people, and all the ways in which trans people's liberation is inseparably connected with the struggle of the working class for freedom. She debunks several transphobic myths, dissects the media-driven moral panic about us, describes in detail the unholy alliance between reactionary "feminists" and American neo-nazis, and envisions a better world in which workers' liberation and trans people's liberation will go hand in hand to improve the lives of both (not least because these two categories overlap significantly). She also explains transition, how it works, when it starts, and most crucially, how much of the general public's opinion about it is distorted and based in outright, easily debunked, lies.

But. Here's the but.

The book isn't without flaws. Be that Faye's persistent use of outdated (in many cases, considered slurs) words without quotation marks that would indicate quotes or then-contemporary use when writing about historical events and people, her hesitation to call fascism what it is despite her overwhelming condemnation of respectability politics (I don't believe the word "Nazi" appears more than once or twice), and her irritating insistence on extending absurd amounts of good faith to fascists, with euphemisms like "ultra-conservative" or an overuse of subjunctives in the form of too many "may", "might", "could", "perhaps", and whatnot. One cannot help but ask how much obvious bad faith and undisguised ill intent is needed before Shon Faye will call a Nazi a Nazi and stop pretending far-right ideologues are "concerned" or worry about women's rights.

The other big issue is the dragging of in-community discourses before an audience that is not involved, does not know about them, does not get a vote in them, and does not have the knowledge or context to make sense of them. Was Marsha a trans woman even though the word didn't exist then? Should LGB be separate from the T? By the time she comes around and says, yes, most T people are also LGB, and our struggles have always been connected, she has already spent a dozen pages showing understanding for "LGB without the T" bigots (and by extension, their far-right backers). Similarly, before she admits that calling historical trans people trans, even though the word hadn't been invented then, is probably beneficial, she has already spent tens of pages providing ammunition to those who want nothing more but to erase our forebearers from history and frame us as a 21st century fad.

Let me be blunt: if an uninformed-but-well-meaning person can read your book and come away a transphobe, you've failed. Period.

Or, in other words: trans people reading this book won't learn much they didn't know already, cis people will receive vital education, but also be told stuff that doesn't concern them, may confuse them, or (due to Faye's occaisonal both-sides-ism) even appear to strengthen fascist positions.

So why the fours starts?

Because, going by content alone, and the sheer amount of well-explained, well-sourced, well-argued debunking of transphobia herein, the book deserves all the stars I have to give, and some more. It is just its occasional bad form, and the confusion about who the intended audience is, that undermine this book's important message.

Don't give this to your liberal friends, though. The chapter on prison abolition and anti-policing will upset them.

The title promises "brief answers", and the (German) blurb claims said answers are "accessible and clear". Unfortunately, the answer are neither brief nor accessible.

The book is a compilation of texts from Hawking, begun during his lifetime and finished posthumously. The patchwork nature of the book shows, unfortunately, as several thoughts or explanations (such as about the dangers of artificial intelligence or the components of DNA) are repeated multiple times throughout the book. Overall, much of the writing seems incoherent, with sudden, unexpected tangents to different topics. Many times, Hawking's "brief" answers go on for well over 20 or even 30 pages, and I am left thinking that the answer could have been summarised within 10, had it not been for several off-topic passages.

The answers themselves are hardly suitable for the kind of layman the marketing suggests they were written for. Complex theories and concepts are presented with little explanation, and often, the explanation is inadequate. Hawking presents a theory, spends a short paragraph explaining it, then moves on to three new theories based on the first one, while I'm still trying to wrap my head around his first paragraph. I gave up any and all hope of understanding a single word he said about thirty pages into the book and didn't regain it until the end. I am left none the wiser, with the possible exception of a few personal anecdotes which are of little to no interest to me.

The one part that can be understood quite easily is near the end, when Hawking begins to lecture - or preach, rather - about the future of humanity in general, and various technologies in particular. Here, he repeats several inaccurate statements about the state of the world, which rather makes me wish he had stuck with cosmology. He parrots the myth that Earth is at risk from overpopulation and fails to see that the issue is not too little supply, but the way the supply is distributed. He entirely avoids any sort of analysis on the connections between climate change/food crises/resource scarcity/etc and capitalism, but rather preaches individual responsibility.

The fact that my owning or not owning a car (I don't) is irrelevant when compared to 70% of global CO2 emissions being caused by the super rich matters little to Hawking, nor does AI-based discrimination and undermining of worker's rights stop him from promising a world of total equality brought to you by AI. The racist myth of overpopulation is constantly repeated throughout the last third of the book, and whenever he is not busy praising Elon Musk - notable for market manipulation, discriminatory workplace practices, and subpar quality e-SUVs -, Hawking advocates wasting further money on space exploration.

Speaking of which: space exploration. If Hawking is to be believed, in space lies the future of humanity, liberation from all that plagues us, and our future as a species. Private spaceflight is something he can't praise enough, entirely unconcerned by the for-profit nature of the industry, it primarily being a hobby for billionnaires, the waste and pollution problems associated with it, or the socio-economic implications of an industry that's on course to divide humankind into a class that can afford to escape the confines of our planet and one that can't. One is tempted to remind Hawking of Nietzsche, who urged "remain faithful to the earth and do not believe those who speak to you of extraterrestrial hopes! They are mixers of poisons whether they know it or not."

Hawking seems downright obsessed with the idea of colonising our solar system, and it appears that as far as he is concerned, we can't leave Earth soon enough. Concerns of human rights, exploiting capitalists, and the likes among the stars are not something the great man appears to bother with (unlike Musk, whom Hawking loves to praise, and who recently publicly dreamt of luring workers into indentured servitude on Mars). In space, so Hawking, humankind could evolve, progress, and whatnot. Plenty of similarly vague promises and hopes are thrown around by Hawking, yet he fails to deliver anything concrete, just as he fails to think outside the capitalist box when he talks of financing space exploration, so-and-so many percent of the GDP to be dedicated to rockets and probes, and downplays the enormous costs of such programmes. An explanation as to why a moon base, or an outpost on Mars, would benefit humanity beyond lining the pockets of Elon Musk and satisfying human delusions of grandeur, Hawking has not.

He fails to deliver on his other big topic as well: artificial intelligence. On more than one occasion, he invokes Moore's Law (the processing power of computers doubles every 18 months), yet fails to account for the commonly accepted (including by Gordon Moore) assumption that Moore's Law will lose its validity around the mid-2020s as the limits of silicon-based processors are reached. So far, no viable quantom computer alternative appears in sight, but Hawking does not falter in his doomsday predictions of an all-dominating AI. In this, he sees the biggest threat to our continued existence - bigger even, it seems, than climate change, which, by the way, he hopes to combat by means of nuclear power. The ever-repeating warnings of an AI singularity (again, the editors appear to have stitched together several texts without editing out repetitions) grow boring fairly soon, and do little to lend credence to any of his prophecies. He would have been wise to take his own advice: that predicting the future is, while possible in theory, impossible in practice.

What remains, after all? A book that will leave newcomers utterly confused and none the wiser, and will likely not hold anything newsworthy for people familiar with the subject; perhaps a bitter aftertaste and the unfortunate impression that a great man's name has been slapped on a patchy manuscript in order to sell some books. Stephen Hawking may have been one of the greatest minds in recent history, but if this is truly his writing and not the doing of an untalented editor, then he was not a great teacher, and certainly not a particularly gifted philosopher. Perhaps the late and great man should have left guidance about the future of humankind in someone else's hands. And seriously, what's with all the Musk shilling?

Rick Riordan's second short story collection disappoints as much as the first. Among the almost 240 pages, about a third are filled with puzzles, games, and cringeworthy "behind the scenes" content clearly aimed at the younger portion of his audience; already a teenager (which there are plenty of among Percy Jackson's fans) would be bored to tears. What remains are three short stories: The Diary of Luke Castellan, The Staff of Hermes, and The Son of Magic, the latter having been written by Riordan's son Haley.

The quality of the shorts varies quite a bit. While Luke's diary entry is somewhat solemn in tone and gives an interesting insight into the character of Luke, The Staff of Hermes is the sort of brainless comedy I've come to expect from Riordan's more recent works (already showing during the Heroes of Olympus series, and painfully obvious during the Trials of Apollo premiere). Of course I can't fault a children's book for being aimed at children, but I believe even at that age, I would have found the plot thin and the jokes embarrassing.

The Son of Magic has, of course, to be judged as what it is, the first published work of an aspiring, sixteen-year-old author. And for that, it's pretty good. We are not only shown the fate of Alabaster Torrington post-The Last Olympian, but also provided with an interesting insight into demigod magic, the Mist, and the details surrounding the beginning of Gaia's insurrection. Of course, the story has undergone editing, so whatever flaws Haley Riordan's writing may have have certainly been softened by the editor, but if this short is anything to go by, Haley's writing has the potential to match that of his father (in good as in bad). Parts of the story require a lot of willing suspension of disbelief, but overall, save for a few cumbersome sentences, the quality of the story lives up to the rest of the book. It certainly surpasses The Staff of Hermes.

Um es kurz zu machen: inhaltlich gut, grauenhaft gemacht.

Am Anfang des Buches wird der Name der lektorierenden Person genannt. Was genau diese Person beruflich macht, ich weiß es nicht, aber Lektorat ist es jedenfalls nicht.

Um mit Lob anzufangen: das Buch ist inhaltlich korrekt und sagt viel wichtiges. Frau Ewert weiß wovon sie spricht und es gibt viele Sätze hierin, die ich gerne doppelt unterstreichen oder auf irgendwelche Hauswände plakatieren möchte. Es wird umfassend auf viele Themen eingegangen, von der Frage "was ist Geschlecht eigentlich", über zahlreiche Facetten des Lebens als trans Person, zu detaillierten Dekonstruktionen verschiedener Ausdrucksformen von Transfeindlichkeit. So weit, so gut.

Leider ist das Buch ansonsten extrem schlecht gemacht. Bekäme ich einen Euro für jeden Rechtschreib- und Grammatikfehler, ich könnte den Verlag aufkaufen. Kein Kapitel kommt aus ohne komplett vermeidbare Falschschreibungen ("Verglecihe", "Feministiinnen", "todgeschwiegen") und dergleichen. Die Kommasetzung ist chaotisch und lässt keinerlei Konsistenz erkennen, regelmäßig scheint die Autorin den Unterschied zwischen Haupt- und Nebensätzen zu vergessen, wo frau hinschaut, überall hat es Fehler. Hier wurde scheinbar nicht einmal der Aufwand betrieben, das fertige Buch einmal durch die Rechtschreibprüfung von LibreOffice zu schicken. Probleme wie fehlende Leerzeichen nach Punkten, doppelte Leerzeichen vor und nach Kommata, oder Verwechslung von "das" und "dass" sind da nur die Streusel auf dem Rechtschreib-McSundae.

Aber es wird noch schöner. Formatierung und inhaltliche Konsistenz sind genau so katastrophal. Mal wird auf vorherige Kapitel Bezug genommen, die es so im Buch nicht gibt, ein anderes Mal zieht sich ein Absatz über drei Seiten. Mehrmals wird im Buch abrupt Schriftart und -größe ohne jeden erkennbaren Grund geändert, und wie gut der Blocksatz funktioniert variiert stark, mitunter fallen Zeilen auf in denen wahlweise sämtliche Leerzeichen verschwunden sind, oder absurd große Lücken klaffen. Der Stil fügt sich harmonisch ein ins chaotische Gesamtbild, Hervorhebungen werden an geradzahligen Tagen mit * gekennzeichnet, an ungeradzahligen Tagen mit - oder _, und in Schaltjahren wird mit CAPSLOCK hervorgehoben. Quellen werden in der Regel nach wissenschaftlicher Manier angegeben (vergl. Autoren Jahr Seite), außer wenn sie es nicht werden, und plötzlich komplette URLs im Fließtext stehen - mal unterstrichen, mal nicht.

Apropros Quellen: diese werden sehr unregelmäßig verwendet. Während manche Kapitel mehr Quellen(1) enthalten(2) als das Werk(3, 4) eines übereifrigen Wikipedia-Autors(5), vergehen an anderen Stellen vier oder fünf Kapitel ohne eine einzige Quelle. Im Vorwort nimmt Frau Ewert für sich in Anspruch, eine Mischung aus Sachbuch, Autobiografie, und Unterhaltung geschrieben zu haben; leider scheitert sie in allen drei Disziplinen. In der Mischung aus wissenschaftlich anmutender Betrachtung und persönlichen Anekdoten ist kein Sinn oder Muster erkennbar, die einzige Konstante ist die durchgehend unlustige Verwendung von Twittersprache, "zwinker*", und deplatzierter Ironie oder Sprüchen wie "FIGHT ME". Das, zusammen mit andauernder Wiederholung und erneuter Einführung bereits behandelter Themen, lassen das Buch weniger als zusammenhängendes Werk und mehr wie ein Stückwerk aus verschiedenen Texten wirken; beinahe, als habe Frau Ewert alle ihre Twitter-Threads in Microsoft Word kopiert und von dort ohne Lektorat oder Satz ausgedruckt.

Selbst das Inhaltsverzeichnis bleibt von diesem Chaos nicht verschont: während die meisten Kapitel nach dem Schema "10. Thema Soundso" betitelt sind, trägt allein Kapitel 21 den Namen "21. Kapitel Soundso". Zwischenüberschriften sind mal numeriert und mal nicht, und die Länge der Kapitel schwankt zwischen einer halben Seite und dem halben Buch. Den Namen des aktuellen Kapitels in die Kopfzeile zu setzen hätte der Übersicht gut getan, im jetzigen Zustand hatte ich nach zehn Seiten Schwadronieren ohne Zeilenumbruch oft vergessen in welchem Kapitel ich mich eigentlich befand, und mich erst erinnert wenn die Autorin nach einem dreiseitigen Exkurs unerwartet zu ihrem Thema zurückfand.

An welche Zielgruppe sich das Buch richten soll ist vollkommen unklar. Eingangs erklärt die Autorin, auch Fachfremde ansprechen zu wollen, und präsentiert zu diesem Zwecke ein kleines Glossar. Für Laien ist das Buch aber vollkommen nutzlos (und für mit dem Thema vertraute Menschen bietet es nichts neues), der Wechsel von gezwungen humorvoller Anekdote zu akademischem Duktus überfordert. Im Glossar nicht aufgeführte Begriffe werden nicht erklärt, Abkürzungen regelmäßig klein geschrieben, anfangs Begriffe definiert die im eigentlichen Buch nicht verwendet werden, und so weiter. Die übermäßige Fixierung auf Anekdoten von Twitter scheint geeignet, Laien zu dem Fehlschluss zu verleiten, es handle sich hier primär um ein Netzproblem, und die unregelmäßig auftauchenden wissenschaftlich aufgemachten Passagen sind ähnlich gut lesbar wie ein Mathebuch. Wer überlegt hatte, das Buch etwa unaufgeklärten Verwandten zu schenken, kann das getrost vergessen: die andauernde Verwendung von Anglizismen (selbst bei Wörtern, für die sich im Deutschen gemeinhin genutzte Alternativen etabliert haben, etwa "non-binary" für "nichtbinär") und Twittersprache macht das Buch für die Generation 40+ in etwa so unverständlich wie das Jugendwort des Jahres. Felicia Ewert beklagt im Vorwort zurecht, dass trans Personen regelmäßig abgesprochen werde, selbst Forschende statt Forschungsobjekt zu sein - und unterwandert ihren eigenen Anspruch auf Ernsthaftigkeit prompt mit ihrem chaotischen Machwerk.

Was bleibt als Fazit? Ich las das Buch um seine Tauglichkeit als Einführung ins Thema Transgeschlechtlichkeit zu überprüfen, mit dem Gedanken, das eine oder andere Coming-out vielleicht durch begleitende Literatur zu erleichtern. Den Gedanken habe ich nach zwei oder drei Kapiteln verworfen. Übrig bleibt mir nur zu sagen, dass eine an und für sich sinnvolle Message komplett ruiniert wurde durch miserables oder nicht stattgefundenes Lektorat, dilettantischen Satz, und den Verzicht auf jegliche sinnvolle Strukturierung oder Unterscheidung zwischen Erzählung und Analyse.

Obwohl ich Felicia Ewert sehr schätze und überzeugt bin, dass sie viel richtiges und wichtiges zu sagen hat, ist es ihr nicht gelungen, das in diesem Buch auszudrücken; ein Scheitern, das ich mindestens zur Hälfte dem Verlang anlasten muss. Mir ist durchaus klar, dass edition assemblage als kleiner Verlag begrenzte Ressourcen zur Verfügung hat, aber 90% der Fehler in diesem Buch hätten an zwei Arbeitstagen unter Zuhilfenahme einer Textverarbeitung a la Word oder LibreOffice behoben werden können. Sogar von der Autorin selbst, die, anders kann ich mir das nicht erklären, das Ergebnis vor der Drucklegung wohl nicht selbst gelesen haben muss. Ob der Verlag ein gutes Manuskript ruiniert hat oder versäumt hat, ein vielversprechendes Manuskript in gute Form zu bringen, das kann ich nur rätselraten.

Ein wichtiger Hinweis zuletzt: meine gesamte Rezension bezieht sich auf die Erstausgabe von 2018. Aktuell ist meines Wissens nach die, laut Umschlag "vollständig überarbeitete", zweite Auflage von 2020. Die liegt mir aber nicht vor.
