Kanada (Hardcover, German language, DK Verlag - Reise) 4 stars

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (2007) 4 stars

“The end was near.” —Voices from the Zombie War

The Zombie War came unthinkably close …

Wow. Nothing like the movie and an intensely gripping read.

5 stars

This book tells the fictional story of the Zombie War in what looks like first hand accounts with interview questions, footnotes and information about the setting. Despite this unique structure it was a real page turner that I could barely put down once I started reading. It paints a very smart picture of the choices, desparation and outcomes such a scenario would produce. And: It has nothing to do with the movie. In fact, I was surprised how different the book was.

The Canadian Constitution (Paperback, Dundurn) 5 stars

The Canadian constitution includes the complete text of the Constitution Acts of 1867 and 1982 …

"Peace, Order, and Good Governance"

5 stars

Every constitution has one line that aptly defines the nature of the country it is governing. The German constitution calls out the invoiability of human dignity, Americans cherish "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" and Canada values Peace, Order, and Good Governance. To be honest, I think there is something profoundly true and beautiful about this.

The Canadian Constitution is messy and yet it is an example other countries follow. Consisting of several laws and unwritten conventions it tells a story of Canada's soul (yeah, I know that sounds a bit dramatic but I mean it) as much as the journey from British colony to the place Canada is today. Yes, this book contains a lot of legalese but the author Adam Dodek does a great job in explaining it to the layman.

23 Uhr 12 (German language, dtv Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG) 5 stars

I've Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of the Underground Railroad (2007) 5 stars

I life story like no other

5 stars

Since I moved to North America I started reading up on black and indigenous history of this continent. This book paints a vivid picture of the underground railroad, the trek that thousands of slaves took to flee the US towards Kanada. It anchors on the inspiring and rich life story or Thornton and Lucie Blackburn who escaped slavery on that trek. Well worth your time! There's also a fabulous audiobook read by Karen Chilton.

Early Bird (Paperback, 2006, Simon & Schuster) 4 stars

Everyone says they would like to retire early, but comedy writer Rothman actually did it--forty …

Funny, witty, entertaining

4 stars

This was a quick and fun read, giving a small glimpse into the retirement communities in Florida. I enjoyed the book even though it wasn't exactly high literature or particularly insightful.
