A Master of Djinn (Hardcover, 2021, Tor) 4 stars

Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award-winner P. Djèlí Clark returns to his popular alternate Cairo universe …

Gumshoes in steampunk Egypt

4 stars

Agent Fatma is called to investigate the deaths of all members of a secret society, and assigned a new young partner, the latest woman in an organization that is overwhelmingly male. So a bit of old-cop, new-cop, plays out throughout the story, where Fatma learns to trust her partner.

There’s plenty of sluething and subterfuge at play in this book, with a fantasy, sci-fi, and whodunit mashup. Clark keeps the pages turning, with occasional head-scratchers. For instance, why does Fatma routinely make mistakes in how she conducts her work with Djinn, when that’s her job?

However, the general grist of the story is strong, the characters are engaging, and the surprises are truly surprising. I recommend it.

Has good info, but bogged down by author's spiritual beliefs

2 stars

The information, once you get to it, is good. But you have to wade through the author's personal spiritual beliefs through much of the first half of the book.

You need to skip to just past half of the book to actually get to the content that the book's title is about. The anatomical drawings and explanations are quite good, but they do coexist with more spiritual beliefs.

I recommend the book for the drawings and explanations, but with the reservation that much of the book gets in the way of the information it presents.

Once Upon a Winter's Eve (Paperback, 2016, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform) 1 star

Dare has better works.

1 star

This was awful. Not among Tessa Dare's better works (Girl Meets Duke is a good series if you're new to reading Dare's works).

Violet is staying in Spindle Cove after her supposed beau, Christian, left her suddenly after a night of passion. He left a single note, and otherwise appears to have no thought for her.

A year later, he returns, and wants Violet. But all isn't as it seems at first.

What's galling is that Christian doesn't have much to offer Violet. He has an explanation for why he left suddenly, but it lacks substance. It lacks verve. It lacks a person who is willing to commit to Violet. Violet has so much more to offer, that it feels like she's settling for the guy that ran without a solid explanation.

The book was a letdown for me. I hope to quickly forget the couple's gluey love.
