I actually read the sequel before reading this book and loved it, so I know Alice Hoffman can write plot, but in this book it was pretty dead and buried.

I think she does a good job deciding what to include, providing a solid overview with a focus on the more relevant history of the last century. In short, the perfect book for someone knowing very little about Chinese history, like me!
