Review of 'Rood en wit met blauw' on 'Storygraph'

2 stars

I struggled through this book due to the unlikable and obnoxious characters, especially Alex, so it was difficult to get invested into the main relationship.
The side characters just seemed to blend together at some point. Not a big fan of how the British characters were written (less stereotypical, more nuanced please), it felt they were sidelined in favour of the Americans.
The plot is okay, good if you like the lack of conflict. I enjoyed the use of emails for the main couple's correspondence, their RL interactions not so much. There were some funny moments but not as much as I hoped.
I thought I'd try some romcom in-between some of the heavier stuff I'm reading, but after this experience I'll give up on the genre for the time being. Guess it's not for me!

I started this book because it came for free with my e-reader and I thought I might as well read it.
The story very much feels like a history lesson, and although I enjoy reading about history, the plotline itself felt like a rehash with inserted original characters. The characters were very one dimensional (written as either brave or despicable) and there was barely any character development. On top of that, the war is depicted in very black and white terms, and also very one-sided.
That aside, I do think it was quite informative to some extent as someone who lacks knowledge on Scottish medieval history, so I wouldn't say that it felt like I completely wasted my time.
