I read a lot (sometimes). See me also on Mastodon at @nytpu@tilde.zone, on the web at https://nytpu.com, and on Gemini at gemini://nytpu.com

A note on why my reading history looks so empty: Also, unfortunately I've not really logged my books before this. I know /what/ books I've read, but not /when/ I've read them. Unlike my film logs where I've logged what I've watched when for years, not so with books. So, pretty much any book read before March 2021 is either a rough estimate for a date or I have no record of it at all.

The Shining (Paperback, 2006, Hodder Paperback) 4 stars

Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their young son Danny move into the Overlook Hotel, …

One of Stephen King's actually good books

4 stars

Content warning Very minor spoilers of foreshadowing elements early on in the book

The King in Yellow (Paperback, 2020, Millennium Publications) 4 stars

Wish the rest of the stories were as engrossing as the first four or so

4 stars

Content warning Minor spoilers of the meta-plot

The Lord of the Rings (The Lord of the Rings, #1-3) (2005) 5 stars

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three volumes of the epic novel …

The single greatest (and probably one of the only greatest) fantasy novels ever written.

5 stars

Wonderful world-building and beautifully crafted and wondrous settings, but unlike The Silmarillion (1977) it actually has an engaging, overarching story that keeps you engaged and gives you a reason why to travel through this world.

Very realistic look into what may have been a very real possibility

4 stars

Obviously it's fiction, but apparently the plot described in the book was a very real fear of the SDECE, and like in the book may have been impossible to discuss without sheer luck on the investigators' part. Brilliantly written, and I really love the opening describing actual events to anchor the book in reality.

Midnight in Chernobyl (2019) 5 stars

"Journalist Adam Higginbotham's definitive, years-in-the-making account of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster--and a powerful …

Excellent look into the Chernobyl disaster

5 stars

Really good and detailed look into the creation of Chernobyl and Pripyat, the Chernobyl disaster itself, and the aftermath, but also has really good insights into the sociopolitical climate of the Soviet Union at the time. Definite recommend, especially if you're interested in nuclear power, but also if you're interested in the politics of the Soviet Union near its collapse.
