"The Calling" is the first book in a series called "Finding Humanity".

Well written, with engaging characters and a good pace, we follow the experiences of two groups of people on Earth, one on the surface, one underground.

The ones underground are determined to find other havens where people live, but that's easier said than done. Expeditions to the frozen surface require a lot of preparation, and resources are limited.

Be ready for misunderstanding, rigid minds and insights of many kinds.

A great story about a strange friendship, separation, a family feud and family matters, all wrapped in a wonderful world setting. An eye opening experiences for both heroines.

Very much an entertaining, and entirely alternative take on Captain Hook.
Peter Pan isn't the protagonist in this version, and the way the story's written is fantastic. It sparked my imagination in many ways, and I enjoyed the good dialogue.

Definitely recommended.

A very intriguing and well-paced story about Ashe and her 'family', who escaped from a facility that wasn't kind to them.

Armed with above-average powers, they roam around until they meet a group of people that resonates with most of them.

I'm not going to spoil things, but this is a book worth reading if you like chimeras and good-paced writing.

A nice story about a young woman who comes into power in a way she hadn't expected.

The world is well described and the inner life of several characters is very well laid out.

It's just too slow, too descriptive for me.

This was a surprise. In a good way.
Reading the blurb made it appealing already, but once in that world, I was taken from twist to new thing almost every chapter. Definitely a very good and interesting read.

The initial message of body freedom and how it came about in the book was very good. That's why I gave 3 stars.

The sexual descriptions and encounters were too much for me and seemed to become more prominent throughout the book. That killed the experience of the story for me.

Third book in the series. Still an amazing world - or should I say 'still amazing worlds'?
Mr Pullman did his best to create a fantastic set and I enjoyed most of it.

Most? (No spoilers but my own opinion follows, proceed at your own peril.)

Yes... the end of this one felt a bit 'forced', as if this book was more a battle of willpower than a bout of inspiration. Maybe I'm totally wrong but there you have it. My view.

Still kudos to the author for pulling off such an epic fantasy story.

Insightful book on the state of American Atheism.

Good book with interesting characters and plots.
Most of them still familiar from book 1, which I enjoyed more.

Towards the end it felt as if there were quite a lot of named characters that will not return in book 3, making it all a bit confusing at moments.

Still, a very worthwhile read. :)
