Lord of the Rings + Looney Tunes

5 stars

Bone is easily the most recommendable comic book ever made. I can't think of a single person who would pick this up and not enjoy it, it has something for everyone.

Bone is a fantasy epic that plays out a lot like an older cartoon. Expect great humor, simple characters, but a great overarching plot that slowly gets more sinister as it goes on. Just fantastic.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Box Set (2012) 5 stars

Masterpiece!

5 stars

One of my favorite pieces of fiction in any medium. I really can't gush about how underlooked it is because of its age (1982 - 1994). It's such a shame we'll probably never see a proper adaptation since Hayao Miyazaki is protective of his work (and rightfully so, his work is incredible).

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is an epic fantasy post-apocalyptic steampunk-ish story where the earth has been engulfed by fire and what remains are tiny pieces of inhabitable land and giant forests of corruption, filled with miasma and massive insects. The world is incredibly well made and always very interesting. The story always kept me interested and was surprisingly varied. The action is S-tier, with a ton of great battles and set pieces... I could go on, you get the point.

Really, if there's a single issue with this manga, it's that the action scenes can …

Bit of a mixed bag, but a great ride

4 stars

Bloodchild and other stories is a great collection of vastly different short stories. It's a bit of a mixed bag though, some are great while others are mediocre and uninteresting. The main story of the collection, Bloodchild, is definitely the best one. I can't help but feel putting it as the first story was a bad move as it sets up high expectations for the stories to come.

Descender Volume 4: Orbital Mechanics (2017) 2 stars

Review of 'Descender Volume 4: Orbital Mechanics' on 'Goodreads'

The story has potential but the dialogue is abysmal and the characters are cardboard boxes. I expected way more from Jeff Lemire but this series makes it look like he doesn't know how to write. Also, for a sci-fi series based around robots, it feels like he has no idea how robots even work.

There are tons of plotholes and inconsistencies, why can't they just remove TIM's memory? Why is every robot self aware, including basic ones like driller bots? Why did quon equip a caretaker bot with a giant plasma cannon? Why did the UGC guy send literally TWO PEOPLE to do such an important, potentially world-saving mission? (One of which, Telsa, is utterly incompetent and doesn't want to send for reinforcements because... "Dad will overreact"?)

Just mediocre writing all around. I would drop the series but I'm close to the end so I might as well see how …

A good retelling of the classic Snow White tale (No, not the Disney one, the old grimm version).

Colleen Doran had too much freedom with the art though, as she mentioned in the end of the book. The art is great when it needs to be, but the nudity is excessive and unnecessary. It's one thing for it to be written, but the art turns this from being disturbing to me constantly thinking "did they really have to draw this part?"
