Institutional authority is portrayed as self-serving and incompetent. The film adaptation of the novel, released in 2002, became (at the time) the fifth highest-grossing film ever and received generally favourable reviews. Video games loosely based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were also released for several platforms, and most obtained favourable reviews.

Jeg leste denne for første gang da jeg var 20. Min tanke da var at den var hakket bedre enn første, men jeg var ikke videre fornøyd. Og mens gjenlesinga av bok 1 var en positiv overraskelse, ble jeg mindre fenga av denne. Jeg lurer på om det er fordi det tilsynelatende er et mysterium de skal oppklare, men de egentlig gjør svært lite for å nøste opp i det hele. Det virker som om skoleåret ruller og går mens de stanger hodet i veggen uten å komme noe vei. Det er ikke like spennende når løsningene stadig vekk blir servert av andre og/eller tilfeldigheter. (Hadde Hermine ikke vært satt ut av spill store deler av boka, hadde de kanskje nøsta opp i det raskere.) ...Eller er det andre grunner som jeg ikke helt klarer å sette ord på. Lesinga var likevel fornøyelig da jeg hadde episoder av Potter-generasjonen på …
