Not quite as good as the first, but it's hard to compete with Neil Gaiman, isn't it?

It took me a little while to get into this book. I think I was trying to read it like a YA novel (since the protagonist is a teenager), but it felt more like a children's book. Once I decided it was a children's book, I definitely loved it.
If you're looking for really good sci-fi, I wouldn't recommend it. The science in it seemed really good, but it was definitely more fantasy than sci-fi. But of course, fantasy is what he does best.
I do hope there are more books after this one. It stands really well by itself, but it felt like it would work really well as an introduction to a larger story: a Hobbit waiting for its Lord of the Rings.

As a science fiction novel, this is terrible. It pretends to be hard sci-fi, but is actually very soft sci-fi. It's almost like Quantum Leap, if Quantum Leap was written by an idiot.
As a historical fiction, however, this book is very fascinating, and really well-written (albeit with a few minor historical inaccuracies).
In addition, it was really hard to get through the first book (both books make up one single story), as the main characters were three of the most unlikable, whiny, childish people I've ever read about. They did eventually grow up and redeem themselves partway through the second book, but I'm honestly amazed I was able to continue reading after how bad the first book really was.
How this woman won a Hugo and a Nebula Award is beyond my understanding.
Also, if the ending of the movie Premonition really annoyed you, don't even start this book, …

Despite its outward appearance, this is only half a book. It ends with literally no conclusion at all.
I will save my full review for when I've actually finished the book ([b:All Clear|7519231|All Clear|Connie Willis|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320549311s/7519231.jpg|9735628]).
