@pikapika there's no way for me I'll ever manage to read that much 😂 crossing my fingers for you though!

I found Bookwyrm by exploring the fediverse, and really enjoy this cozy corner of the internet. I love reading but am not reading much currently, I'm always happy about advice to make it easier to read regularly and of course about book recommendations ☺️
Reading mostly in German and English, sometimes French or Spanish. Profile picture Pixelart by me.

Luce reviewed Dawn (Xenogenesis, #1) by Octavia E. Butler
Can't get it out of my head
5 stars
Exciting read, one of the books I couldn't put down. It's a very interesting analysis of humans and how they live together, and thoughts about if a kind of "benevolent dictator" would make it better or worse. I feel like the book doesn't come to a conclusion on its own, but let's readers think about it and opens some really interesting questions I hadn't really thought about before. The characters and development are great, and the story is well written and very entertaining besides making me think.

Luce finished reading Mein Name ist Luz by Elsa Osorio
I loved the style of this very touching book. I have some family relations to Argentina and the military dictatorship and this book really helped me to learn more about this time and certain tendencies in Argentinian culture. But I can also very much recommend it for the story and emotional development of the characters and their relationships, and how they are also formed by the political circumstances and trauma, and how people can work on it and for a better society if they want. It's one of those books that you keep thinking about. The original version in Spanish is called "A veinte años, Luz" which translates to "At twenty years, light", but Luz is also the name of the main character. There's quite a few scenes I would add CWs to (violence, torture, rape/sexual assault, forced adoption), so be careful if you're not in a headspace to read …

I found this book by chance in a cute little bookstore, and I hope I'll learn something about this dark chapter of Argentinian history. I'm a bit afraid of what I'll find.

@InfiniteTypewriters I guess a lot of it depends on the quality of translations and also if they're somewhat advertised in other countries, and after your comment I checked wikipedia and it seems there's some discussion especially in the US that it's not proper sci-fi so that might be a reason as well. Do you read in English or in German? As you've mentioned reading the description I guess you understand German?
Luce replied to InfiniteTypewriters's status
@InfiniteTypewriters It's a huge series, so entirely possible, but I only read one book of this series before (the one written by Andreas Eschbach) so not an expert at all :) I think it's pretty popular in Germany?
