[after 3 minutes of listening] ok is this incredibly horny or is it me?

This one, to me, seemed very untypical for Le Guin. I would have thought it was one of her first, but actually it was written after the hainish cycle. The Taoism is very on the nose here, but it doesn't have much of the poetry and the reverence for life and mind that I loved about her other works.

It was written as an homage to Philip K. Dick and it really read more like one of his novels, like classical 70s sci-fi.

one hour into the audiobook and wow, this is easy to follow! it's understandable, even entertaining! both the writing and the audiobook narration are exceptional

set against the backdrop of climate change and ecocide, with cool characters, and a nice conflict between witchcraft and science. i really like that the book doesn't take itself too seriously, even though it is dealing with the big questions. also, there were some really fresh ideas. i really loved that it's in between a young adult and truly-adult book. i loved the friendship between the main characters but i really HATED that it turned into a love story. otherwise this might have been 4 or 5 stars for me.

really nice world building and good writing! but atm it is too YA for me. I want adult protagonists with adult problems ;)
